blackberry & quince believes the finest quality ingredients make the finest quality bath, body and skin care products.

I have high standards, and I believe that transparency matters.  Some of my products are made completely from scratch, and some start with high-quality bases made by suppliers that share my standards.  Listing my ingredients allows you to make choices about what you put on your skin.  And it's just the right thing to do.

I research the ingredients used in my products using databases such as EWG and the California Safe Cosmetics Program Product Database.   If I don't feel good about an ingredient, then I don't use it.  I would love to say that I don't use *any* synthetics or "nature identical" ingredients, but that wouldn't be truthful - or even possible in some of my products.  And I'm okay with them, but you may not be.  That's why I list everything, whether required by law or not.

Coconut Beauty Products

Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil is naturally high in saturated fat and lauric acid, making it an incredible moisturizer and skin softener.  It produces a nice, fluffy lather.

blackberry & quince offers products made with with both organic and conventional coconut oil.

Luscious Palm Leaves

RSPO-Compliant Palm Oil

In addition to being rich in antioxidants, Palm Oil feels fabulously soft and silky on the skin.  It helps create a creamy lather.

blackberry and quince only uses palm oil sourced from suppliers who comply with the standards set by the Roundtable On Sustainable Palm Oil.  These standards ensure that your purchases do not in any way contribute to the destruction of rainforests and fragile ecosystems.  RSPO also sets standards for the fair treatment of workers according to local and international labor rights standards.

Safflower Oil

Safflower Oil is wonderfully skin-conditioning and moisturizing.  It helps keep your pores from becoming clogged and reduces the appearance of flaking skin.

Jungle Waterfall

Purified Water

If you wouldn't drink it, you probably don't want to use it on your skin, either.  The water used in my products has been purified from chemicals and excess minerals which can clog pores.  It has also been filtered to remove metals and many other impurities which may cause dry skin and/or frizzy hair.

Orang Plant

Glycerin

Glycerin is a safe, natural, odorless, tasteless viscous liquid used in everything from food products to pharmaceuticals to (of course) beauty and bath & body products.  Glycerin is a humectant, meaning that it draws moisture from the air - sometimes seen as "dew" on glycerin soap.  It helps the skin to attract and lock in its own natural moisture, leaving it feeling soft.  It also helps slow the evaporation of water from your skin to help alleviate chronic dryness.  Glycerin is often recommended by dermatologists for problem or sensitive skin.

Gourmet Olive Oil

Olive Oil

Olive oil is rich in vitamins, fatty acid minerals.  Olive oil soap is non-greasy and so will not clog pores which is great for acne prone skin.  Olive Oil is also a natural makeup remover, so enjoy washing away the work day.

Fresh Cow Milk

Goat's Milk

Goat's milk contains precious skin minerals like selenium, and is loaded with vitamins, particularly vitamin A, the most important vitamin for the skin.  It also contains alpha-hydroxy acids such as lactic acid which help remove dead skin cells from your skin's surface.  Our Goat Milk Soap helps your skin appear vibrant & youthful.  It is a gentle yet effective cleanser which softens & moisturizes the skin.

aloe vera.jpg

Aloe Vera

Almost everyone is familiar with the skin benefits of Aloe Vera for sunburn and minor abrasions.  It also softens the skin without clogging pores and moisturizes without being greasy.  As an antioxidant, Aloe Vera works hard to combat free radicals, and helps to slow the aging appearance of your skin.  It also contains Aloin, a natural depigmentation agent, which may help fade skin discolorations, age and sun spots or blemishes.

oats.jpg

Oatmeal

Oatmeal has rich anti-oxidant properties and helps undo the appearance of damage done to your skin by pollution, UV rays and chemicals. Oatmeal, and its natural oil coat, moisturize, protect and gently cleanse, while correcting the pH of itchy or inflamed skin.  The proteins in oatmeal maintain the skin’s natural barrier. They even protect your skin from harsh pollutants and chemicals. The lubricating fats in oats aid in UV protection.

Honey Jars

Honey / Quaternized Honey

Honey is a natural humectant, which means it absorbs moisture from the air.  It also contains the antioxidant polyphenols, which helps shield your skin cells from free radical damage.  It is extremely moisturizing and soothing, so it helps create a glow.

Quaternized Honey is honey that has been modified through a cationic process, creating a positively-charged quaternary cationic polymer.  It is non-sticky, much more hydrating than standard honey, and is completely natural.

Traditional Spices in Market

Organic, Cultivated Without Chemicals and Ethically Wildharvested Herbs

I use a multitude of herbs in my soaps - chamomile, lavender, comfrey, plantain, lemon balm, marshmallow root, and so many more.  They add exfoliating texture, natural color and light scent to my soaps.  Many herbs have properties that are beneficial to both mind and body.

sodium hydroxide2.jpg

Sodium Hydroxide

Sodium Hydroxide is lye.  Every bar of soap is made this way.  There's no way to have solid soap without it. Very basically, lye is added to fats and oils and the end result is pure soap.  The chemical process is called saponification and, when done properly, uses up all of the lye.

My suppliers have been making soap for over 50 years, and are one of the highest regarded suppliers in the industry.  They allow me to make consistently high-quality soaps.

Ingredients That No One Can Pronounce

Tocopherol?

Coco-Glucoside?

Phenoxyethanol?

I often rely on CosmeticsInfo.org and the EWG Skin Deep Cosmetics Database to research the health and safety concerns surrounding these types of ingredients.
